DOG DONATION ON COUNTY BOARD AGENDA

Contributed by: Mike Norton
At Tuesday's Special Orders meeting for the Winnebago County Board a resolution will be considered to accept a gift of a Dog to Winnebago County K-9 Program from Julie Broderick and approve appropriation of donated funds for training.I would like to hear from you. At issue for me is what will it cost Winnebago County in later years.

Did you ask this, Mike? What was their answer?K9 provides a huge benefit to law enforcement. There is a cost, but the benefit is huge. K9 can provide tracking and scenting that human officers cannot provide."Don't cut public safety" has been a mantra found in many blog sites. At least one K9 unit in a county this size has become the norm. Please don't take that away from us.

I don't think having a K9 program is the issue, we have one now do we not? It's an issue of do we need another dog for that program, and while the dog and the training might be "free", the maintenance of the dog after that is not. Neither is the handler. It's kind of like an amphitheater...Somebody should know how many police dogs a county like Winnebago needs. Do we or do we not have that number? As far as I know, police dogs have a time period where after training, they are useful for police use. After that, they're just pets. Where are our dog(s) at in that time period? If this proposed new one takes a year to train, (or whatever the time period is), will we have one nearing retirement that needs to be replaced? Then, it would make sense. Otherwise, I say don't increase the size just because somebody is giving you a dog and training for "free".

One call to Sheriff Brooks would answer the question. I would think a member of the Winnebago County Board would make that call before asking the public this question.

The county does not have a dog and has not had one for about a year or so. Now the question is, if we are getting dogs now, why didn't we have at least one for the past year? Politics vs Protection???
