Governor Doyle Details How Wisconsin Citizens Can Help Haiti Earthquake Victims
[We have received the following press release and are pleased to publish it.]
MADISON – Governor Jim Doyle today detailed the ways that Wisconsin citizens can assist the victims of this Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in Haiti.
“The Haiti earthquake has claimed thousands of lives and has left many more without homes, food or water,” Governor Doyle said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy, and Wisconsin is ready to step up and help any way we can.”
The most effective and efficient way for Wisconsin citizens to help the relief effort is through cash donations. They allow humanitarian organizations to purchase the exact type and quantity of items needed by those affected by the crisis. You can immediately donate to the Red Cross online at http://american.redcross.org/supporthaiti.
You can also donate $10 to the American Red Cross’s Haitian relief efforts to be charged to your cell phone bill by texting "HAITI" to "90999."
The U.S. State Department Operations Center has set up the following number for Americans seeking information about family members in Haiti: 1-888-407-4747. This line is experiencing a high volume of calls at this time, so the State Department asks for your continued patience. The International Committee of the Red Cross also has a website for citizens seeking information about their loved ones in Haiti: http://www.icrc.org/familylinks
Citizens are advised that the airport in Haiti is being used to facilitate search and rescue efforts, so private citizens are encouraged to focus their efforts on supporting established aid organizations that are deploying resources to Haiti, and to hold off on traveling there themselves.
For more ways to help, Wisconsin citizens can visit the following resources:
• Center for International Disaster Information: 703-276-1914, http://www.cidi.org/incident/haiti-10a/
• USAID’s interactive website: http://www.usaid.gov/
• State, local and Tribal governments looking to provide resources or capabilities should send an email to helphaiti@state.gov, and indicate in the subject line what resources are being offered, e.g., “Donation of XXXX”
• Citizens can link to the U.S. State Department Haiti Earthquake Relief Website through the Governor’s website at: http://www.wisgov.state.wi.us/
