Free summer movies at Oshkosh Public Library


June 4, 2012A sword-fighting cat, an action-hero take on a renowned British sleuth and a bounty-hunting beauty with attitude are just a few of the characters in the lineup of free Monday Matinees and Family Movie Nights at the Oshkosh Public Library.

Licensing restrictions prohibit listing the titles here, but movie buffs will recognize these films:

Family Movie Nights
Thurs., June 7; 6:30 p.m.
Meet a suave sword-fighting cat who can disarm an enemy with his pitiful gaze. Find out what our hero was doing before he met up with Shrek, Donkey and all their fairy tale friends. Rated PG.

Thurs., Aug. 2; 6:30 p.m.
With the help of three of their fans, Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang reunite to save their old theater from a greedy oil tycoon. Rated PG.

Monday Matinees
June 18; 1 p.m.
There’s never been a bounty hunter quite like Stephanie Plum, who ends up chasing down a wanted local cop from her romantic past. Based on the best-selling book series by Janet Evanovich. Rated PG-13.

July 16; 1 p.m.
It’s anything but elementary, my dear Watson, when the great detective and his sidekick join forces to outwit their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law bring action and thrills to some classic characters in this sequel. Rated PG-13.

Aug. 20; 1 p.m.
Young Albert enlists to serve in World War I after his beloved horse is sold to the cavalry. His hopeful journey takes him out of England and across Europe as the war rages on. Rated PG-13.

Summer Reading film talks
Classic film aficionado Dr. Jack Rhodes leads a discussion on leading men and leading ladies for these two Summer Reading events for adults:

Wed., Aug. 1; 1 p.m.
James Stewart plays a mild-mannered deputy who doesn’t like guns in this 1939 film set in the corrupt frontier town of Bottleneck. Marlene Dietrich is Frenchy, the alluring saloon girl who wins his heart.

Wed., Aug. 8; 1 p.m.
Katherine Hepburn is a rich, spoiled socialite who learns some things about herself on the eve of her second marriage. The sophisticated romantic comedy also stars Cary Grant and James Stewart. Rated PG.
