Proposed cable access bill and its affect on you
There is a bill moving through the legislature in Madison that will impact cable access channels throughout Wisconsin. The degree to which channels and their programming are affected depends largely on the type of amendments that are attached to the measure, which is expected to pass in some form. We recently taped a program with OCAT Media Services Director Jon Urben, on which he discusses the proposed legislation and how it could affect OCAT programming and viewers. The draft of this legislation continues to evolve, and is doing so quickly. To see the most recent version, visit www.ocatonline.com. Cable access viewers are also asked to write or call their representatives in Madison. Rep. Gordon Hintz can be reached via email at Gordon.Hintz@legis.wisconsin.gov or by calling his office at 608-266-2254. Sen. Carol Roessler can be reached via email at Sen.Roessler@legis.wisconsin.gov or by phone at Toll-free: 1-(888) 736-8720. Because of the speed with which this legislation is moving, we’re told it’s important people write or call as soon as possible.

[we have received the following from OCAT Media Service Director Jon Urben and are pleased to publish it here...]
Dear OCAT supporters, producers and viewers:
Just a quick update on the state bills (AB 207/SB 107) pending in Madison. Your letters and emails to legislators ARE making a difference. Representative Gordon Hintz has now come out publicly in support of our "PEG-friendly" amendments. Thank you Gordon! City Manager Richard Wollangk and I met with Senator Roessler this morning and she too has expressed support for our amendments. Thank you to Carol as well! We continue to hear that this bill is on the fast track and will most likely pass. It is therefore imperative that OCAT supporters continue to let Representative Hintz and Senator Roessler know that a) you want the "PEG-friendly" amendments included in any bill and b) you appreciate them being advocates on our behalf. If you have not yet written or emailed our legislators on this issue, please do so! If you have, please send another letter. We are in a critical period now as legislators are expected to begin floor discussions of these bills as early as next week. Visit our website: www.OCATonline.com for an updated sample letter and more information on this issue.
I am also excited to note that www.saveaccesswisconsin.org is now live and has a wealth of information on this issue. We owe a special thanks to the Friends of OCAT and Eau Claire Public Access Television for providing funds to develop this site. I would ask that all of you visit this site and complete the fields in the "Our Supporters" section. Doing so will have you listed on the site as a supporter and allow you to receive updates on this issue. Your contact information will NOT be given to any third parties. If others ask you about this issue and want to get involved, please refer them to the "SAW" site address, our OCATonline.com address, or have them call me directly at (920) 236-5269.
Kind regards,
Jon
