Deer management meeting scheduled for tonight
According to the folks from Save the Quarry Deer group, there will be a community meeting/forum this evening in the Oshkosh Common Council chambers (4th floor) at City Hall, 215 Church St., beginning at 6 pm and running until 9 pm. The topics of discussion will be the deer issues, best ways to manage the deer herd and the possible formation of a committee to work on these issues with the city. Group members are urging anyone interested in this issue to show up tonight. If you can’t make the meeting, call or write your Common Council members. All their email addresses are on the city’s web site. I personally like the idea of email because it gives you proof you contacted people – something a phone call doesn’t necessarily do. Group members fear if there is not enough interest or not enough people in attendance at the meeting, the city will take that as a sign that the interest and public outrage over the killing of the deer has waned and they will continue to cull the herds come autumn. Again, the meeting will be in the 4th floor Council Chambers at City Hall, 215 Church St., tonight, June 30, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Can I just ask one little question here? If the deer are doing damage…in ANY way… To areas in public domain, what is all the fuss about shooting them? Do we not have the right and even the obligation to kill these pests? Have we become so blind to the fact that we are the superior species here and have the right to make sure the damage in stopped or at least minimized by eradicating the surplus population of deer? You, in this on-line statement, seem to make a plea for folks to come out and save the deer. WHY? Shoot the things and be done with the issue. We have plenty more where they came from. You people who think these animals have the right to damage or destroy public lands need to save the deer in your yard, if that’s your desire, but if it’s public land and damage is being done, don’t cull them, KILL THEM!! Good gracious you tree huggers are annoying.
I was passing along the information and requests from the Save the Deer group. And yes, I certainly did tell people if they were concerned about the issue to either show up or contact their Common Council members. They could be concerned about the issue either for or against culling. I happen to be opposed to the culling and that is my right. I believe there are other options, some of which may require trying to get legislation changed. Other alternatives can include people planting things that deer are not attracted to, etc. I will again make the argument about rabbits and the damage they cause. It is far more widespread throughout the city and there are far more rabbits than there are deer. What, pray tell, is our city going to do about that? If you're going to be concerned about getting rid of one type of wildlife that damages property, should we not be doing something about all destructive wildlife? There are plenty of other arguments against culling, but I'll leave it at this.
