Declining Income In Wisconsin

Contributed by: Anonymous
The editorial in the Tuesday September 5, 2006 edition of the Oshkosh Northwestern was perfectly appropriate as we get closer to setting a City Budget and enter into negotiations with the city's various bargaining units.

The story related how in the past few years, the income of an average Wisconsin family has been in steady decline. Citing the Census Bureau's recent American Community Survey, the median income for an average working family in Wisconsin dropped 4.6% in a one year period, 2004-2005.

These figures continue to represent a trend that is devastating the middleclass American. We can no longer just concern ourselves with the “fixed” income status of elderly retired workers, we must be even more concerned about the DECLINING income of those still in the workforce. Furthermore, actual “income” doesn’t even take into consideration the cost of healthcare for working families.

As we just come off of a national holiday meant to celebrate the average laborer in America, we are sadly mistaken if we truly can expect to continue this celebration in the future.

Many fingers can be pointed as to why the Middleclass is being devastated, but to be fare, we need to look internally first. Union labor in America is what created the Middleclass. Unions in America are now partly responsible for the devastating burden placed on the middleclass taxpayer. Public sector unions continue to place enormous pressure on their FELLOW middleclass taxpayers. As public sector unions continue to lobby for higher wages and benefits, the homeowner and taxpayer foots the bill for those increases.

It is clearly the case that with middleclass incomes on the decline, healthcare costs on the rise, the middleclass American lifestyle is in jeopardy, in part, due to the greedy nature of public sector unions in America.

Did the study include the populations of the Potawatami Indian Tribe? I was told recently by a reliable source that their income has increased recently. I was wondering why that would be the case?

I don't have any idea if the Indians affected that whole poll thing, but all I can tell you is that I was way better off money and benefit wise in 2000 than I am right now.I got laid off and was lucky to find another job but at much less pay and almost no benefits. If the job market ever picks up again, I'd leave this job in a minute. I can say there are no loyalties anymore. One thing I know is that for the past two elections I voted Republican. I still don't like gay marrage and I am not for abortions, but this time I have to vote for whats best for ME. All I know is that I was way better off when Democrats were running the show in Washington, so I'm going to vote Democrat this election. The thing I dont get is that with the Republicans, they have the White House, they had the Senate and they got the House an the whole Country is still messed up! I thought they'd finally get things worked out but its way worse. AND I'm not going to get all "scared" that if they are running the show the county is going to get blown up. The no spin way I see that is that no matter what, Dem or Rep, no Amercian will let that happen. So heres my thing, the unions are greedy, the republicans are greedy, the oil companys are greedy, corporate america is greedy so I'm going to do everything I can to put a stop to it. This time Im voting for ME...an average American worker!

I can understand your anger having lost your job but take a deep breath. Those "greedy unions" almost ALWAYS push their members to vote for the Democratic candidate. I agree the Republicans have not done squat for the average worker but I see the Democrats not doing any more for the average worker AND they want to tax us more too. Ugh! The lesser of two evils seem to be the Republicans as much as I hate to say that!

Nope...I simply don't agree OshGuy.The poster makes a great point that the white house, senate and congress are all republican controled and we are in a deep pile of dung in this country. At the very least, we need BALANCE. It appears no single party should control the entire process. I'm voting democrat too.I think at some point the independent party will launch a up-start candidate that will actually appeal to the average American taxpayer. Someone who is less controlled by special interests...but until that time, we need balance so both parties of thieves will hold each other in check.
