The Harris Sales Tax

I don't know if raising the county sales tax a half percent is a good idea or not--though I lean against it because sales taxes tend to be regressive. But I am disappointed that Mark Harris did not talk more about this issue during his campaign for county executive. He lambasted Jane Van De Hey for mismanaging the budget, but never do I recall him saying that raising the sales tax would be an option he would seriously consider. He also had ample opportunity to introduce a discussion of raising the sales tax when he sat on the county board, but I do not recall him doing that.
So, this has the look of just one more "bait and switch" political campaign: run for office saying that you will look for ways to be more efficient, make cuts, yada yada yada. But then the moment you get in office, ask for a tax increase. Very disappointing. --Tony

didn't he say this was a result of the recent legislature and governor? i believe the northwestern also reported other ways he is looking to avoid elminating jobs such as pay range caps. he should also talk with the union to see if there are savings there too as to not lose jobs. do you have any suggestions?

Mark should take some of the money from his hair care budget as that is a good start.......And how about addressing the budget problems before they occur.....Reduce the size of county government and the number of elected officials......Shop the insurance for non represented staff........

The Bigdog is right - our county is BLOATED and needs to do more to reduce spending.
