What are we doing about the geese ?

Contributed by: Anonymous
What are we doing about the geese in Menominee Park. Playing on the softball diamonds is borderline disgusting. And having a picnic on a blanket in the park is almost impossible without covering yourself in goose droppings !!

So when is this going to be addressed ? ? And how ? ?

why don't you call the Parks Director at 236-5000 and he will give you the answser. Why ask people of this to guess at the truth.

Isn't mother nature wonderful? Have you ever seen an animal as adaptable as our ubiquitous "flying carp"?

We had a somewhat successful program started a few years ago, whereby we sprayed oil on the eggs of the nesting honkers. That worked, for awhile. Now, they go elsewhere to nest and not be disturbed, and once the goslings can fly, back to the park they come.

Here's the thing: Everything that makes the park attractive to you also makes it attractive to geese. The quiet wide open space and the grass. Just add water, and you've got geese. It's a formula that's working extremely well across the upper midwest, much to most peoples chagrine. (Believe it or not, our goose problem is relatively mild in comparison to other areas).

What is the solution? There are very few things if any that have been tried that work long term, save for outright killing of the geese. To paraphrase Admiral Bull Halsey at a press conference during WWII, when asked what his strategy was for winning the war, he said "first, I'm going to kill geese. Then, I'm going to kill more geese. Finally, I'm going to keep on killing geese".

Anybody have any other ideas? Try to remember that we'd like to do this with as few tax dollars as possible...

To the person who keeps providing phone numbers for city hall, thank you for playing the role of directory assistance. But why don't you STOP trying to discourage discussion on this web site in the process? If that's all you want to do, go away; we don't need you here, nor do we want you. The simple fact remains that some people who come here just might actually KNOW the answers that we are seeking. But maybe you just can't stand that some people in the know actually visit this site and comment on it.

Oiling eggs is not the answer here. Geese will re-nest up to 3 times to have a successful brood.

6-8 volunteer hunters trained by the city with rules and regulations and certain times to erradicate them I would think could make very short work of this problem. Very few people are in the park if any before 8 A.M.......Ya I know, a liability nightmare. But Winneconne did it last year with bow hunters and certain times and locations.

Point is something needs to be done !!!!.....Before you know it it will be Sept and Oct and the numbers are 10-20 fold with the migration !!

Ye Gods, I live in a city of soreheads. The geese are WONDERFUL. Open your eyes and ENJOY them.

You who hate taxes, the geese are free!
They have great family vlaues. Mothers take care of their young. Fathers hang around.
They provids their own native music without need of an ampitheatre. They are pleasant but not obtrusive.

As to droppings, if you inspect them you will find they are more than ninety percent grass. They break down and recycle nicely. They are virtually odor free.

Personally I love the geese. There is an essential peace about them. They speak one of God's languages that I do not yet know. I shrink from the idea of oiling their eggs or hiring sharpshooters.

For what? To make room for more abandoned McSomething wrappers and cast off condoms?

I wish we could welcome these creatures, let them live among us as St. Francis would have. I wish we could learn to live without defining our pleasure by the numbers of harmless animals we can kill.

I have walked among the geese in the park. I have heard them murmur among themselves. I have seen the patient glint in their eyes as they have moved aside to allow me to pass.

Milwaukee is getting rid of there geese through the Dept of Ag......I ask again, what are we doing ?

I counted just over 100 geese yesterday at the park. With the average goose dropping 3 lbs. of waste we are literally dumping 300 lbs. A DAY in our park !!

9000 lbs a month of crap that we have to walk around in, run around in, and lay our blankets on !!

Come Sept and October that number will be 4-5 fold !!!

Canadian geese are coverered under migratory bird treaties and conservation acts (even though one of the arguments against that is that they seldom really migrate anymore), so I think a municipality needs to get permission from the US Interior Dept. to "thin" them out. I'm guessing that means pernission to disturb their eggs as well.
It's hard to believe that these "crap machines" were once an endangerered bird
I've heard of golf courses doing everything from "hiring" border collies to spreading Kool-aid mix on the grass to get rid of them with mixed results.
