Guests at most hotels are welcomed by a smiling face. But there is one hotel in Asheville, North Carolina, where they are also welcomed by a wagging tail and a lick to the face. It's all part of a unique adoption program being used there to save shelter dogs from euthanasia, by finding them loving fur-ever homes. Fit Oshkosh, Inc. Hosts a Community Movie Night and Chat Back
Fit Oshkosh, Inc., a grassroots, nonprofit organization devoted to providing Racial Literacy and Technology Literacy to adults in Winnebago County is hosting a Community Movie Night and Chat Back on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at The Oshkosh Masonic Center at 204 Washington Ave, in Oshkosh, WI from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The cost of admission is $3.00 for students and $6.50 for all others. Concessions will be available. The proceeds will be used to support Racial Literacy learning.
Attendees will watch the highly-acclaimed 1998 motion picture "American History X." It is a provocative movie that touches on the current-day themes of race, politics, socioeconomics, religion, masculinity, and family dynamics. The movie will be followed by a Chat Back, which is a facilitated conversation about these topics.
Fit Oshkosh’s Executive Director, Tracey Robertson, describes the value of this kind of event: “Movies are a comfortable way for individuals to talk through some of the challenging issues that are being played out on a national level and closer to home here in Winnebago County. We use this movie-model in other trainings and we know that it is a non-threatening way for people from all walks of life to have authentic conversations. Typically people don’t talk beyond the surface with these topics because they do not know how. A Chat Back gives attendees a place to ask critical questions and to learn with one another.”
The movie is Rated R for violence, sex, nudity and strong language.
Tickets go on sale on December 31, 2014 and can be purchased by email at traceyrobertson@att.net, by calling 920-216-3107, or at the door.
Fit Oshkosh offers Racial Literacy Workshops throughout Winnebago County to nonprofit organizations, schools, university classes, faith groups, and businesses. For more information, please call 920-216-3107.

Fratello's-Oshkosh is cooking up a special to help local humane society
As we see Christmas decorations and lights popping up everywhere and the ads on TV with all their glitz, there can be no doubt that the holiday season is upon us. Families will gather with loved ones and friends in their homes to celebrate the season of love and peace. But everyone deserves a home for the holidays and that includes the animals being cared for at the Oshkosh Area Humane Society (OAHS). And while they all won’t get adopted in time for the holidays, you can sti...ll help make their holidays brighter—and Fratellos in Oshkosh wants to help you help them.
On Wednesday, Dec. 10 from 4 pm until closing time, for anyone who stops in for a bite to eat and mentions to their waitstaff person that they’re eating for the animal shelter (or OAHS), Fratello’s will donate 15% of their total bill to the shelter. You get a delicious meal and beverage, and Fratello’s makes the donation. All you have to do is mention OAHS.
So whether you’re taking a break from holiday shopping, or you simply want to unwind by having a nice, relaxing dinner after a long day at work, it’s the perfect way to help the pets in our community who don’t have a home or family to be with for the holidays.
It doesn’t get much better, or easier than that! But, mark your calendar now because it’s only on December 10! To learn about other ways you can help the shelter anytime, visit them at www.oahs.org

Eye on Oshkosh learns about racial literacy in its latest episode
The latest episode of Eye on Oshkosh is now taped and uploaded to You Tube. It will begin airing in Oshkosh and the surrounding areas in the next week or two. In the meantime you can see it here. I visited for the entire hour with Tracey Robertson from Fit Oshkosh, who shared a conversation with me about racial literacy. I can't emphasize enough how important I think it is for people to watch this episode, no matter what your position or role in life is. http://youtu.be/NkyiwXJE2Bs
