Eye on Oshkosh "celebrates" Veterans Day with a special guest

In this episode of Eye on Oshkosh, host Cheryl Hentz visits with Oshkosh Parks director Ray Maurer during the first half of the show about proposed user fees for local softball/baseball groups wanting to use city fields. They also briefly discuss how things are going now that dogs are allowed in many city parks, and the concerns surrounding the presence of animal exhibits in a city park during Sawdust Days in late June/early July.

In the second segment, Hentz chats with Dave Kersztyn, president of the Military Veterans Museum and Education Center in Oshkosh. With Veterans' Day right around the corner we thought this was a nice way of publicizing the museum and its mission, as well as discussing respect for military vets and the flag, etc. And to all veterans, including our four-legged military dogs,

Eye on Oshkosh wishes each and every one of you a Happy Veterans Day. Thank you for your service so we Americans can each enjoy the many freedoms we share and often take for granted.

Take Me to the River art exhibit planned at Kaukauna's Grand KaKalin

KAUKAUNA, WI -- Take Me to the River art exhibit will be held Nov. 4 to Dec. 2 in the River Level Suites of the Historic Eagle Mill at Grand Kakalin, 207 Thilmany Road.

The month-long art exhibit will showcase a vast array of local creative talent. Free and open to the public, the exhibit will feature multi-sensory art experiences, pop-ups and art-infused surprises throughout. Highlights will include visual art galleries, live music, audio art, photography, performing art, storytelling, writing, poetry, hair and makeup, fashion, motion graphics/animation art, film, interactive projection mapping, and culinary art.

The exhibit's opening reception at 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Nov. 4 features live music by Christopher Gold, Nicholas Raymond and LevenhagenArts. The closing celebration from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Dec. 2 includes performances by Hillary Reynolds and Feed the Dog. All ages are encouraged to visit the gallery during general open hours from noon to 5 p.m.,  Mon-Fri during the exhibit. Private and public evening and weekend events in collaboration with this exhibit are also in the works.

The use of the building space was made possible by signature sponsor, Stadtmueller & Associates. The local company focuses on redevelopment and historic preservation, with many of their projects located along the Fox River.

"Take Me to the River at Grand Kakalin is an inaugural blend of community heritage with the arts as a key component," said company President and building co-owner Randy Stadtmueller.  "The Fox River is what connects many of us to our past and to our future.  History, arts and culture help to tell this important story,” he added.

Jean Detjen, Founder of the new Take Me to the River arts revival initiative was inspired by the newly restored 1872 riverfront paper mill. "The Grand Kakalin riverfront space is brimming with character, beauty and life,” she said. Detjen viewed the raw, industrial vacant lower level as a canvas for artists to tell the story of the river through their creations.

Along with the Bank of Kaukauna, The Heart of the Valley Chamber of Commerce is a collaborative partner in the project.  Kelli Clussman, executive director said: “We are proud to be part of Take Me to the River.   This event showcases the talent and diversity of our community while spotlighting the Historic Eagle Mill at Grand Kakalin.”

"My river path is through my art and now I’m sharing it with Kaukauna which became a town because of the river, the Indians, fur trading and the paper mill," says contributing artist Patt Huss. "To be a part of that history, and to be a part of this great exciting venue, reviving art in the community is refreshing indeed."

Eye on Oshkosh hits the radio airwaves

Since 2002 Eye on Oshkosh has been on cable access TV (and all shows are archived on You Tube). Today I have added a new dimension to the show - I'm now also doing Eye on Oshkosh (the radio show). Some of the shows will be unique; others will be a duplicate of what's on TV and You Tube. But there will always be information that is interesting and something you can hopefully use in your day-to-day life).

Below is a link to the first unique show, in which I discuss holiday pet safety with Dr. Elizabeth Holt of Badgerland Veterinary Clinic in Oshkosh. Oodles of great information. I encourage you to download it and give it a listen. http://www.mediafire.com/file/0boc76dot9sfg25/Eye_on_Oshkosh_episode_1_Badgerland_FINAL.mp3

Thanks to Scott at Oshkosh Media and the Friends of Oshkosh Media for their help and support.

Join the Pumpkin Pageant at Oshkosh Public Library

Children of all ages are invited to grab a pumpkin, shift their creativity into high gear and enter the Pumpkin Pageant at the Oshkosh Public Library. Families can start bringing in decorated pumpkins on Oct. 14. Deadline to enter is Thursday, Oct. 27 at 9 p.m.

This is not a carving contest. Pumpkins will be displayed indoors, so carving would result in the dreaded “fuzzy pumpkin.” Each year contestants come up with creative new ideas for painting, dressing or otherwise decorating their pumpkins without cutting them open.

Decorated pumpkins should be brought to the Children’s Department in the library’s lower level. Final judging takes place on Fri., Oct. 28. Awards will be given out in five age categories and four design categories. There will also be a People’s Choice Award. Children can pick up their pumpkins during the week after Halloween.

Prizes will include new books, food coupons and other goodies.

For complete details about the Pumpkin Pageant or other programs and events for children and families at the Oshkosh Public Library call 236-5208 or visit www.oshkoshpubliclibrary.org.
