Here's what's coming up on Eye on Oshkosh beginning Dec. 3, 2012...

Be sure to join us starting Monday, December 3 when Cheryl spends the hour visiting with Joni Geiger and Cheryl Rosenthal from the Oshkosh Area Humane Society. Hear how their Shelter Trek event went this past September, what other events they have going on, the various things they do for pets and people in the community and how you can help with the overwhelming pet population they're experiencing right now. They'll also share some tips that will help keep your pets safe this upcoming holiday season. If you have pets, or love animals and would like to help make a difference, this is one show you won't want to miss. * Programming note: Given that there are holiday pet safety tips in this episode, and the fact that the holiday season is upon us and our schedules are all rather busy, this show will run for three weeks - from Dec. 3 thru Dec. 22, 20112

In the Oshkosh area, "Eye on Oshkosh" can be seen Mondays at 7 p.m., Thursdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 6 p.m. on local cable access channel 2 (Time Warner Cable). Gifts with a Local Flair, Holiday Shopping Locally at the Oshkosh Saturday Farmers Market

Holiday shoppers in search of unique, locally grown food or hand-crafted items for entertaining or gifts will find many items on their list at the Oshkosh Saturday Farmers Market – Winter. Located downtown inside City Center (Jackson Street entrance) at the beautiful and spacious Becket’s Atrium, the market is open on December 1 and on its newly changed date December 8 (no market on December 15), from 9am to 1pm.

Here are some items available from nearly 40 vendors for holiday gatherings, cooking, baking, and gifts…all locally grown, raised, or handmade.

Home decorating - fresh wreaths, boughs, fresh and dried flower arrangements, placemats, table runners, blankets, pot holders, napkins, candles, lighted glass bottles, wooden bowls and cutting boards, and more.

Appetizer, meal, and dessert fixin's - chickens, turkeys, assorted meats, cheeses, eggs, squash, garlic, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, mushrooms, herbs, leafy veggies, honey, and nuts. For folks with little time to cook, there is an assortment of delicious canned vegetables and fruits, breads, cookies, pastries, cake pops and balls, salsas, chocolate dipped nuts, soup and dip mixes. They also make great gifts–deliciously appreciated by those who receive them.

Handmade gifts - soaps and candles, bibs, hats, gloves, cooking aprons, whimsical garden accessories, bird houses, clocks, one-of-a-kind clothing made out repurposed sweaters and jackets, blown glass jewelry, alpaca wool yarn, wood carvings, framed photos, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and hair accessories for all ages.

The Market is a great place for ideas. Tap into the vast knowledge each vendor possesses about his or her product. And many vendors will gladly customize and deliver it in time Christmas.

On both December 1 and December 8, face painting is available for the kids and on December 8 Oshkosh North High School’s Madrigals will sing holiday music (sponsored by UW Oshkosh Credit Union) and kids can decorate cookies.

Keeping it local at the Oshkosh Saturday Farmers Market – Winter, 2 Jackson Street, City Center, in downtown Oshkosh.  For more information about the Oshkosh Saturday Farmers Market Inc., contact Kathleen Witman at  920-379-3741  or witmank@gmail.com.

Here is what's playing this week on Eye on Oshkosh...

Be sure to join us starting Monday, November 26 when Cheryl spends the first half hour with Jessica Miller and Pam DeLap who share with her information about the Oshkosh Inclusive Park Project. Since first organizing and getting the Oshkosh Parks Department on board this group has made tremendous movement in their efforts to have a park where all are welcome, but there are many features that make it accessible for children and adults with physical, emotional or mental challenges. We'd like to think that all of our beautiful parks are open to anyone, but if you've ever been restricted by mobility issues, for example - even if just for a short period of time - you know you can't maneuver a walker or wheelchair on grassy areas. etc. This park seeks to remove those types of barriers and challenges. Jessica and Pam discuss the various needs, explain the many things that have happened since they first came up with the idea, and show architectural renderings of the park design.

In the second half hour, Joe Ferlo from the Oshkosh Grand Opera House stops by to discuss how things have been going since the renovations were completed last year, what the response has been from both the public and the performers who play this beautiful and historic venue, and what's on the calendar for the upcoming holiday season.

In the Oshkosh area, "Eye on Oshkosh" can be seen Mondays at 7 p.m., Thursdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 6 p.m. on local cable access channel 2 (Time Warner Cable). Check with your local cable company or its TV listings for replay times in other, more outlying areas. “Eye on Oshkosh” also may air at times other than just those listed. From Oshkosh Area School District Board of Education member, Steve Dedow...

Well, as my term in office for school board ends in April of 2013 and nomination papers can be circulated next month, I would like to say this: This has been an amazing experience, one which I will never forget. I believe in my heart that I have made a positive contribution to improve the educational opportunities for the...
children of our community. I came to the table with no outlined agenda other than to offer a voice from a parent, taxpayer, working man and longtime resident. I am quite proud of the many initiatives that we have accomplished as a Board and as a community. I am also aware that we have made mistakes along the way. I have learned a great deal from those mistakes.

The current Board of Education, as it stands, is an outstanding group of caring, dedicated and diverse community members. I truly respect and admire each one of them. That being said I plan on joining them for another term. I realize that the timing of this statement is somewhat premature, that the “game” is to wait to the last minute to announce that you are running. Quite frankly I do not believe that local politics is a game, especially when it comes to little kids.

Ultimately, what I am saying is; that element of our community which dislikes what I have done as a board member now has an additional four weeks to find a suitable candidate to oppose me.

For myself, I recommit my heart to accomplish what I believe is in the best interest of our children. So I am in - if you’ll have me again.

City of Oshkosh’s Manhole Rehabilitation Program gets underway

The city of Oshkosh continues its efforts to minimize clear water passage into the sanitary sewer systems this week. The city recently awarded a contract to PTS Contractors, Inc. to begin repairs on more than 600 manholes starting Monday, Oct. 29.

Currently, too much clear water, water which does not need to be treated, is finding its way to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The bulk of the project will be on the northeast side of the city, north of the Fox River and east of Jackson Street. With colder temperatures on the way, the goal is to fix as many manholes as possible prior to winter’s interruption.

Repairs scheduled to be performed during this project include the switching of old castings and/or covers, as well as some sections of manholes being replaced or repaired. All roads will remain accessible during the repair work. However, Oshkosh residents are asked to please be cautious when approaching a construction area.

The project is expected to be completed by June 28, 2013. For more information, please visit the city’s website at www.ci.oshkosh.wi.us or contact the Public Works Department at (920) 236-5065.

Here is what's playing this week on Eye on Oshkosh...

Be sure to join us starting Monday, November 5 when Cheryl and Dan are joined in the first half hour by Kathleen Witman who discusses the Winter Farmers Market as it unveils its first season in Oshkosh. Find out where it will be located, when it starts and when it runs, what you can expect to find and how you can be an exhibitor, if not now, then in the future.

During the second half Cheryl and Dan talk with Peter Westort and his wife Mary Ann Offer who recently got back from spending 10 months in Cairo, Egypt where Peter was there teaching on a Fulbright award. Hear how the Fulbright program works, how you begin to pack for 10 months away in a foreign country and what their experiences were like - both good, and some they were a little tenuous about. *Programming note: This show will run for 2 weeks.
