Suicide Awareness and Prevention topics of most recent Eye on Oshkosh

 

Suicide is a major national public health issue in the United States. Due to the stigma surrounding suicide, it is suspected that it generally is underreported. But here are some numbers that we do have.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Leading Causes of Death Reports, in 2019:

o             Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of over 47,500 people.

o             Suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34, and the fourth leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 35 and 44.

o             There were nearly two and a half times as many suicides (47,511) in the United States as there were homicides (19,141).

During this hour-long episode host Cheryl Hentz and licensed social worker and executive director of Community for Hope, Sarah Danahy discuss suicide awareness and prevention. They also share websites and phone number people can call for help. Following is a list of those numbers/websites:
